The concept is simple enough: students stage and compete in legal trials. Just like in real life, there's a defense and a prosecution/plaintiff, and each school presents one side of the case. A key difference, though, is that the competition isn't simply about the verdict: you can lose the case but win the round. You are scored on individual performances, which are totaled, and the team with the most points wins, no matter the jury's decision (sometimes, they don't even tell you). This means you have to consider case theory and performance ability to be successful.

Students can compete as witnesses or attorneys (many do both), and each role requires different skills. On the whole, though, Mock Trial is a blend of legal analysis, oratory, and theater, which provides an educational and enjoyable experience--both academic and real-world.

Each side presents Opening Statements, Direct & Cross Examination of three Plaintiff witnesses and three Defense witnesses, and Closing Arguments. Students must follow the rules of evidence of the “State of Midlands” (an imaginary state that follows the Federal Rules of Evidence). Student attorneys must be familiar with trial procedures, court decorum, evidentiary objections and proper examination techniques. Student witnesses must portray witnesses in a credible manner, consistent with their witness affidavits.

The CMC Mock Trial Teams participate in the American Collegiate Mock Trial Association program. Over 550 teams from universities around the nation compete against each other in exhibition, regional, and national tournaments. The "official" season begins with the regional tournaments in February, which are hosted across the country--CMC is proud to be the annual host of the Pacific Valley Regional. Starting in 2009, top regional teams will advance to the Opening Round Championship Sites (ORCS) for the chance to compete at the National Championships for the National Title.
